At Arden English is a core subject in more than mere name;
it forms the foundation of every child’s wider academic
success. The Department is driven by a team of dynamic,
innovative, dedicated teachers who take an inclusive approach
to enabling every pupil to engage with, and enjoy, English in
all its forms.
The ability to use language effectively enables us to express
ourselves, to fully comprehend and to communicate
successfully with others, both in school and later in adult life.
It allows us to think, understand and analyse, to persuade and
to recognise when we are being persuaded. A facility with
language is empowering.
Arden pupils learn how to use all aspects of our language; to
appreciate and use its verve, creativity, rigour and beauty.
Working within the English Language and English Literature
frameworks, Arden pupils study English in its myriad forms of
writing and rich variety of speech; going on to develop

expertise in analytical and creative writing, as well as the ability to
construct or defeat an argument. Modern non-fiction also plays
an important role, helping pupils understand how the media
influences its audience through written and spoken language.
At Arden we believe that English Literature provides some of
the world’s most influential and potent poetry, drama and prose
masterpieces. Our pupils learn how to appreciate the language
of literature and the way it creates character, atmosphere and
theme. They learn how literature can change thoughts or
actions by studying a range of seminal works from Chaucer to
Shakespeare through to Friel, Atwood and Angelou.
We seek to foster a life-long love of reading. By extending their
knowledge of important works of literature our pupils gain a
greater understanding of their culture, history and country and
an insight into that of others.
The English Department creates a fun, supportive and caring
environment where pupils feel valued challenged and inspired.
