Ofsted commented in its most recent report that Arden’s
“achievement in Mathematics is outstanding and standards are well
above average”. The Mathematics Department is made up of a
highly qualified, supportive group of specialist teachers whose
passion for this important subject enthuses the pupils in their care.
Every pupil is given the opportunity to take GCSE Mathematics,
with pupils who show particular flair for the subject being fast-
tracked through Key Stage Three for early entry for their GCSE.
Mathematics A-Level is an increasingly popular subject with a large
proportion of Arden’s Sixth Form studying the subject.
Mathematics schooling at Arden is built around a personalised
curriculum that is tailored to encourage every pupil to attain their
maximum. A variety of learning styles are catered for through
diverse teaching strategies which support and extend pupils in all
groups. Teaching methods include group work and activity-based
learning that enable pupils to explore both the theory and the
application of the subject.
‘Maths Clubs’ operate during form time to give extra intervention
to boost pupils in Key Stage Three who have particular weaknesses
in their early understanding of the subject. Mathematics staff make
themselves available with an open door policy during non-contact
time, so that pupils are able to drop in for individual support.
During the run up to exams, extra revision classes are often
provided which prove extremely popular and successful.
Pupils who have a particular passion for the subject are encouraged
to participate in trips which the Department organises regularly.
These include attending lectures by prominent Mathematicians
and workshops at local conferences. Arden pupils also take part
in ‘The National Maths Challenge’ in both individual and team
events and are often successful, with the best pupils progressing
to the National Olympiad Challenge.
