Arden has a specialism in Modern Foreign Languages and is an
officially designated Language College, we have also been re-
accredited with International School Status. We are very proud of
this achievement; it is an outstanding accolade and a true
testament to the high profile foreign languages have within Arden.
The Modern Foreign Languages Department comprises a dedicated
team of specialists who promote language learning enthusiastically;
not only within the local community but also worldwide.
Today as the world becomes smaller and barriers to trade and
movement fall, the acquisition of a second, third or even fourth
language gives pupils a head start in the jobs market. Arden
offers a wide range of languages that ensure pupils are fully
equipped to access the exciting opportunities that languages
provide. French, German, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin Chinese
are all taught from Key Stage Three to GCSE level with A Levels
available for Sixth Formers.
Learning a language extends beyond pure grammar and spoken
word to encompass a wide and varied curriculum which
immerses students in different cultures and exciting learning
opportunities. These wider values are reinforced by a number of
foreign language assistants who enrich pupils’ linguistic ability.

As part of this wider learning experience, Arden offers Content
Language Immersion Learning or ‘CLIL’, which builds a cross-
curricular approach that brings a new language to life. Pupils are
encouraged to become independent with the opportunity to pass
on their knowledge to others; further embedding pupils’ own
understanding of a language. There are also numerous foreign
study opportunities at all Key Stages. These range from foreign
exchange and paired study visits to work experience, and these
instill appreciation of different cultures and customs.
Enjoying working at the forefront of language learning, our
pupils are inspired and supported in achieving their maximum
potential. We firmly believe additional Modern Foreign
Languages open doors to new and exciting horizons. As
legendary Film Director, Federico Fellini once said “a different
language is a different vision of life”.
