The Group’s total direct emissions of CO
2
for the year
ended 28 February 2011 were 261,836,973kg.
The CO
2
per loaded mile was 1.87kg for the year ended
28 February 2011. This represents a 1.6% reduction
compared to the prior year.

As a launch member of the Freight Transport Association’s
Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme (LCRS), Stobart Group
is fully committed to reducing carbon emissions
throughout all our operations.
>
According to the LCRS’ Annual Report, at any one time
around 83% of Stobart vehicles on the road are carrying a
load, compared to an industry average of 71.7 percent. This
significantly better efficiency makes journeys more
economical and environmental responsible.
>
The stringent vehicle replacement programme ensures
trucks benefit from the latest technological advances.
Currently circa 89 percent of the Stobart fleet complies
with stringent Euro 4 or Euro 5 pollution regulations; it is
projected this will rise to over 95 percent by the 2011-
2012 financial year end.
>
An Eddie Stobart operated 18-tonne GVW Volvo diesel-
electric hybrid vehicle will commence delivery operations
for a major FMCG customer early in the summer of 2011.
Resulting reductions in carbon emissions are expected to
range between 10 percent and 15 percent.
>
Working in
conjunction with Volvo Trucks and a major
FMCG customer, Eddie Stobart is conducting field tests in
progress using five factory-built 44 tonne GVW dual-fuel
tractor units using a combination of Liquefied Natural Gas
and Diesel. Trials are showing that these vehicles are
reducing carbon emissions by up to 15 percent.
>
Stobart’s Environmental transport offering is at the
cutting-edge of the sourcing and distribution of biomass
fuels; a key contributor towards meeting the UK’s power
generation requirement more sustainably.
>
The upgrading of
Stobart Air’s London Southend Airport
will offer passengers a 20-minute shorter air journey from
mainland Europe compared to the other London airports
(a 40-minute saving for a round trip). Alongside the
increased convenience there will commensurate
reductions in fuel use and carbon emissions.
>
Stobart’s drivers have been inducted in the techniques of
Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED). Applied in
conjunction with the CANBUS in-cab monitoring system,
SAFED provides ongoing training and rewards for drivers
who make a positive contribution towards improving
safety, and cutting fuel use and engine wear; protecting
our environment and reducing waste.
Enviro-Trailers
In March 2011 Department for Transport launched a public
consultation on high volume semi-trailers and the potential
for increasing allowable trailer lengths. Stobart Group has
long lobbied Government about the advantages of
extending trailer lengths, and has met with Ministers on
numerous occasions to put their case.
Many loads tend to ‘bulk out’ before they ‘weigh out’; filling
the trailer’s maximum capacity before it’s reached its maximum
permitted gross weight.
The increased capacity resulting from extending trailers offers
significant environmental benefits; easing traffic congestion,
reducing pollution and CO
2
emissions, and delivering
important cost efficiency gains to logistics businesses and
their customers.
Health and Wellbeing
The Stobart Group is committed to maintaining and
continuously improving standards of occupational health
and safety for all its employees
Projects undertaken this year include the introduction of health
and nutritional advice in all the Group’s on-site restaurants,
and an initiative encouraging all staff to undergo a ‘healthy
lifestyle’ check.
Health and Safety: Managing Risk
Health and Safety remains a key performance indicator for
the business. During the past year there has been an
excellent safety performance record, with accident/incident
frequency rate at 0.47, reducing from 0.53 in 2010.
This figure shows a marked improvement in safety of 11%.
RIDDOR rates are arrived at by dividing the number of
RIDDOR-recordable incidents in a year by the number of hours
worked x100,000.
Whilst the severe weather during December 2010 did lead to
a rise in ‘RIDDOR’ accidents, these incidents were mainly due
to ice and snow encountered by employees at third party
sites, rather than at Stobart Group facilities.
In the Group’s ongoing drive to achieve and maintain industry
leading Health and Safety performance it has implemented a
‘Stop, Think, Act’ campaign throughout the business. This
campaign aims to reduce the number of preventable
accidents and RIDDOR incidents incurred by employees of
Stobart Group. The success of this campaign is clearly
illustrated by September 2010 where the RIDDOR incident
rate involving Group employees at Stobart sites fell to ZERO.
As one of the logistics sector’s leading providers, Stobart Group takes its corporate and social responsibilities
seriously. The Group has been responsible for numerous positive environmental initiatives and is widely
active in the communities associated with its facilities.
